Active Joy

Summer Garden

Posted 2009-04-28 09:52PM

Why buy it when you can grow it?  Do you have a yard, a patio, or any area that gets more than a couple hours of sunlight every day?  How about a friend or relative that does?  Why not start a family or community garden?  My family, my girlfriend, and I, did just that last weekend.  Talk about a rewarding experience that reconnects humanity back to the Earth.  My girlfriend has never grown anything before, so she was the newbie and she is in for a real treat this summer.  She loved digging her h…

Every Day is Earth Day

Posted 2009-04-27 12:18PM

Recognizing the Earth's dwindling resources, the continuance of species extinctions, and the utmost importance of sustainability, shouldn't every day be Earth Day?  Rather than turning Earth Day into another Valentines Day or Labor Day, lets keep in mind the importance of the planet in regards to our very existence.  Don't wait till Earth Day every year to buy Chico Bags and learn which species are now extinct or what percentage of forests are left.  Honor the Earth everyday if you know whats go…

File:French Garden at Duke Gardens.jpg

This weekend I was over at a neighbors house admiring the work he has put into expanding his home garden.  While we were looking at the explosion of color from the chard I noticed there were holes in some of the leafs and questioned as to what happened.  My friend told me that the birds lie to get in and pick away at the chard leaves that aren't growing as well as the rest.  I asked if he would be putting up netting over the top so the little rascals wouldn't steal peaces of his bounty and he s…

Losing Members

Posted 2009-04-08 12:00PM

We started with six group members, now we are down to four members, and we might be losing another.  For those that chose to drop the class we hope they still take an interest in finding sustainability and respecting the random luck  or miracle, that is our very existence.

This Rain, This Snow, This Weather

Posted 2009-02-22 08:47PM

Since moving up here to Nor Cal about a month ago I have been forcible acclimated to the difference in weather conditions from So Cal.  Living in Cohasset I have had the pleasure of getting snowed in for the first time in my life and having the electricity to out and only being able the heat the house through a wood burning stove.  I miss the constant mild temperatures of So Cal but have already fallen in love with the scenery and cleaner air up here.  I look forward to taking advantage of the c…
